Supers and Society
The truth is that people with superpowers, whether they be strong powers or whether they are gimmicks, number in the millions. People who are born or suddenly awakened with extraordinary gifts are about one in a hundred. This means that almost every job, every industry, every business entity, and the governments of the world, have all developed jobs, task forces, research departments, and special assignments or aid, for people with special gifts and for dealing with those people. As well as a slew of laws have been written for ethical/unethical and legal/illegal uses of such gifts.
This means that it is very common to see people flying to work or a neighbor creating magnificent ice carvings with the power of her mind alone. It also means that the cook at your favorite steak house might not be using the grill, but is instead using his gifts of fire to cook your steak to perfection. It also should go without saying that for every negative situation that can be caused by Supers, there is a positive counter solution to be found using their powers, which can help resolve the aforementioned negative situation. Almost any mundane action or job that can be enhanced by, or be more efficiently done by, Supers, are now simply done that way.
All of this has a darker side to it though. Supers in the United States of America, Australia, Canada, and England (along with other scattered countries in Europe) are, for the most part, treated as normal citizens. They can vote, hold political office, are subject to fair trial, etc. Supers in other countries, like Russia, the Middle East, and other scattered countries across the world, make their Supers register and live in segregated living or worse, sometimes far worse. And this is only the tip of the dark and tainted iceberg – Supers mysteriously disappear and are experimented on; several eugenics programs have been in operation since the early 1900s; and Supers have opened up whole new worlds of secret games that corporations, governments, and mercenaries play. Looking even deeper, all of this has led to a new Cold War, where battles (physical or otherwise) rage; information is regularly stolen or misinformation given; and where secret alliances are created and broken in the shadows, shadows which most people pretend are not even there.
